Newport: Live music
Newport is historically famed for its duo of music festivals: the Ben & Jerry's Folk Festival in late July or August, followed by the August Jazz Festival . Both are held in Fort Adams State Park (tel 401/847-3700), as is the Rhythm & Blues Festival . The lesser-known but arguably more memorable Newport Music Festival , with a focus on classical music, unfolds in the mansions during July (tel 401/846-1133, ).Otherwise, there is plenty of shamelessly unrefined nightlife . Noisy bars abound near the waterfront, and among the live music venues in town, two of the best are the Red Parrot , 348 Thames St (tel 401/847-3800), for live jazz and world music nightly, and the Wharf Deli & Pub , 37 Bowen's Wharf (tel 401/846-9233), which puts on R&B and jazz.
