Providence: Nightlife and entertainment
As Providence's nightlife is largely student-oriented, things get quiet during the vacations, though Thayer Street is always lively. On summer evenings, a party trolley with balloons and noisy music rumbles through downtown. The $6 fee includes entry to six nightclubs on its route, and a half-price drink (Fri & Sat 8.30pm-2am; tel 401/861-1385). The Cable Car Cinema at 204 S Main St (tel 401/272-3970), and the Avon Rep Cinema at 250 Thayer St (tel 401/421-3315), show good independent and art films . The Providence Performing Arts Center, downtown at 220 Weybosset St, hosts various shows in a grand old Art Deco movie house (tel 401/421-2787, ). Finnegan's Wake 397 Westminster St tel 401/751-0290. Authentic Irish pub, right down to the corned beef and cabbage.
Snookers 145 Clifford St tel 401/351-7665. Lively pool hall with a variety of table games. Its green room features alternative DJs and is one of the city's most sociable spots. No cover.
Trinity Brewhouse 186 Fountain St tel 401/453-2337. Hang out here after a Providence Bruins (minor league hockey) or Friars (college basketball) game to imbibe microbrews either in celebration or despair.
