The predominantly privately owned northern Black Hills are more commercialized than their southern siblings, with Rapid City , the hub, surrounded by more interesting smaller towns, such as Sturgis, Spearfish and Deadwood . The back roads, especially in the Spearfish Canyon area, form a network of prime driving and cycling country. The Black Hills Information Center , exit 61 off I-90 (June-Aug daily 8am-8pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat-Sun 9am-5pm; tel 605/355-3700), is just outside of Rapid City and has an abundance of information on the Black Hills, the Badlands and Native American points of interest.
