The
southern Black Hills
encompass lower foothills and wooded pastureland; from a purely physical standpoint they are more attractive than the north, drawing visitors for their scenery and wildlife rather than kitsch or gambling. The two big mountain carvings,
Mount Rushmore
and
Crazy Horse
, mark the northern end of the region,
Custer State Park
and
Wind Cave National Park
account for much of the central zone, and the pleasant town of
Hot Springs
sits on the southern edge.
