Amarillo: Practicalities
Eight local bus lines connect downtown Amarillo with outlying attractions (Mon-Sat 6.30am-6pm; 75¢; tel 806/342-9144), but the city is easier to navigate by car. Greyhound comes in downtown at 700 S Tyler St (tel 806/374-5371). The CVB is at 1000 Polk St (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; tel 806/374-1497 or 1-800/692-1338, ).Innumerable budget hotels are concentrated along I-40. For a little luxury, Ambassador Hotel , 3100 I-40 W, is good value (tel 806/358-6161; $100-130) while Auntie's House , 1712 S Polk St (tel 806/371-8054 or 1-888/661-8054, ; $75-100) is a sweet, welcoming B&B . Texana fans will love the tongue-in-cheek Western camp of the Big Texan Steak House Motel , 7701 I-40 E at exit 75 (tel 806/372-5000 or 1-800/657-7177, ; $50-75). Its restaurant, as well as serving fried rattlesnake and ostrich burgers, offers the 72oz steak challenge: if you can eat it all within an hour, you get it free (losers pony up $54.13). Other popular Amarillo restaurants include Arnold Burgers , 1611 S Washington St (tel 806/372-1741), which serves enormous beef patties (up to 24 inches); Tacos Garcia , 1412 S Ross (tel 806/371-0411), for reliable Mexican food in a festive environment; and the self-consciously bohemian OHMS Gallery Café , 619 S Tyler St (tel 806/373-3233), with a decidedly international menu - think lasagne, shepherd's pie and enchiladas.
