El Paso: Dining and nightlife
Dining is understandably dominated by Mexican cuisine. After dark, El Paso offers an uninspiring mix of clubs and bars . The Camino Real Hotel 's beautiful Dome Bar offers a pleasant drinking atmosphere. Alternatively, head across the border to Ciudad Juarez : two solid options are the Hemingway-esque Kentucky Club Cantina , 629 Av Juarez, just south of the Santa Fe Street bridge, and the more relaxed Viva Mexico restaurant, at the Pueblito Mexicano Mall, with its live mariachi music. The latter is considerably more comfortable for women travelers.Azulejos Hilton Camino Real , 101 S El Paso St tel 915/534-3020. Without doubt the most pleasant dining space in the city, though the prices of the Tex-Mex and regional fare do reflect the location.
Cattleman's Steakhouse Indian Cliffs Ranch, Fabens, TX tel 915/544-3200. A regional legend about 25 miles east of El Paso, serving superb food - plus you can wander around the working ranch. To get here take I-10 east to exit 49, turn right and drive five miles north.
H&H Coffee Shop & Car Wash 701 E Yandell Drive tel 915/533-1144. These adjacent businesses just off downtown work well together; stop by in the morning for their wicked huevos rancheros. Reportedly a favored stop for President Bush and assorted governors.
Puerto Vallarta Grill 1611 Montana Ave tel 915/544-8169. Unassuming local favorite with delicious, seafood-centric Mexican fare.
