Galveston: Eating and drinking
Dining out in Galveston will likely mean settling in at one of the many low-key seafood restaurants along Seawall Boulevard - they're unassuming, yes, but the often delicious fresh fish dishes and unapologetically kitschy decor are strangely intoxicating. Nightlife in Galveston basically amounts to cover bands, but there are several good noisy bars along Post Office Street between 20th and 23rd streets.Casey's 3800 Seawall Blvd tel 409/762-9625. A less expensive option offering local Gulf seafood.
Clary's 8509 Teichman Rd, off I-45 on Offat's Bayou tel 409/740-0771. Somewhat pricey, but recommended for the excellent fresh seafood.
Evolution 2214 Mechanic St tel 409/763-4212. A boisterous nightclub that's a good place to dance off some excess energy - and one of the few places open very late (4 am on weekends).
Old Quarter Acoustic Café 413 20th St tel 409/762-9199. Presents hard-edged folk music; the late Texan singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt wrote Rex's Blues about the café's owner, musician Rex Bell.
21 2102 Post Office St tel 409/762-2101. Classy, subdued bar with a menu of over twenty varieties of martinis.
Phoenix 2228 Ship's Mechanic Rd tel 409/763-4611. Bakery and popular breakfast spot; don't leave without trying the yummy beignets.
Yaga's Café 2314 the Strand tel 409/762-6676. Serves delicious Caribbean food in gaudy surroundings amid reggae and calypso music.
