Bryce Canyon National Park: Practicalities

Much the best place to stay in Bryce is the venerable Bryce Canyon Lodge , one hundred yards from the rim between Sunrise and Sunset points (April-Oct only; same-day reservations tel 435/834-5361, otherwise reserve through Amfac Parks & Resorts, 14001 E Iliff Ave, #600, Aurora, CO 80014; tel 303/297-2757, or ; $75-100), where rustic cabins cost a few dollars more than basic doubles. It also has a dining room , a grocery store, a laundry and public showers. The northern approaches to the park, just off Hwy-12, are guarded (not to say disfigured) by two motels , both owned by the same company and open year-round; the large Best Western Ruby's Inn (tel 435/834-5341 or 1-800/468-8660, ; summer $75-100, winter $35-50), and the cheaper, newer (and misleadingly named) Bryce View Lodge (tel 435/834-5180 or 1-888/279-2304, ; $35-50). Ruby's Inn has its own campground ($14), and there are also two first-come, first-served campgrounds within the park, which charge $10 per night; Sunset Campground , close to Sunset Point, and North Campground , near the visitor center. Backpackers can choose from dozens of sites below the rim, all south of Bryce Point; pick up the required permit at the visitor center, and take lots of water.
