The spectacular and extremely remote
Rainbow Bridge National Monument
, the world's largest natural bridge, can be visited on
guided boat tours
from Wahweap ($89 full-day, $69 half-day), Bullfrog ($83 full-day only) and Hall's Crossing ($89 full-day only). It lies roughly fifty miles by water from either direction, including a final mile or two down the narrow, winding side channel of Forbidding Canyon. From the unappealing jetty where the boats moor, bobbing in a morass of pond scum, a ten-minute walk leads to the astonishing giant sandstone gateway, springing up nearly 300ft from just above the waterline, with Navajo Mountain visible through its magnificent smooth curve. Its upper section is composed of Navajo sandstone, while the base belongs to the harder Kayenta formation, not as easily cut by flowing water; despite the increase in tourism since the creation of the lake, it remains an inspiring sight, and a place of special importance to the Navajo.
