Norfolk: Practicalities
Airport Shuttle (tel 757/857-1231) services connect downtown Norfolk with both Norfolk International Airport ($15), five miles northeast, and Patrick Henry International Airport ($43), twelve miles north. Amtrak bus connections from Newport News stop at the Howard Johnson Waterside , 700 Monticello Ave, and Greyhound stops opposite at no. 701. Norfolk's downtown visitor center is in the Nauticus Center on the waterfront (daily 10am-5pm; tel 757/664-1000 or 1-800/368-3097, ); drivers can go to a larger visitor center at exit 273 off I-64, at Fourth View Street (daily 9am-7pm; tel 757/441-1852).With far more accommodation options available nearby in the more pleasant surroundings of Virginia Beach, there should be no need to resort to the standard hotel and motel chains available in Norfolk, the only real affordable options in the city. You can eat Cajun-style seafood at the Bienville Grille , 723 W 21st St (tel 757/625-5427), or try the eclectic Cajun-Asian blend at The 219 , 219 Granby St (tel 757/627-2896). Waterside Park , downtown at the mouth of the Elizabeth River, has something of a party atmosphere during summer weekends with live music, cheap beer and heaps of atmosphere. Also downtown, the ornate Art Nouveau Wells Theater (tel 757/627-1234) puts on plays and small concerts.
