Richmond: Arrival, information and getting around
Two hours by car from Washington DC via I-95, which cuts through the east side of downtown, Richmond is also served by Amtrak which pulls into 7519 Staples Mill Rd, five miles northwest of downtown, and Greyhound, which stops just off I-64 at 2910 N Blvd, also a good way from the center. The large airport , ten miles east of downtown, is served by major carriers and has a small visitor center (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 804/236-2360) in the arrivals terminal.Another small visitor center is located in the bell tower on the state capitol grounds (Mon-Fri 10am-4pm; tel 804/786-4484); the main visitor center (daily: June-Aug 9am-7pm; Sept-May 9am-5pm; tel 804/358-5511), which provides discounts for some of the area's hotels and advises on tours, joined the CVB head office in 2002 at 403 N 3rd St (tel 804/782-2777 or 1-888/RICHMOND, ).
Most of Richmond is compact enough to walk around, but to get to outlying places (like the stations or the Museum of Fine Arts) you might want to take a GRTC bus (zone system, most fares $1.25; tel 804/358-GRTC). More convenient for museum-hopping is the weekend-only Cultural Connection bus (June-Nov Sat 10am-5.30pm, Sun noon-5.30pm; $1; tel 804/266-8100), whose three separate routes link all major sites. Bikes are available for rent at Two Wheel Travel, a couple of miles from downtown at 2934 W Cary St (tel 804/359-2453).
