Built in 1899, the first in a series of buildings along West First Avenue, the Montvale has been refurbished with a 21st-century art deco steel canopy, designed and built by Spokane artist Hazen Audel, setting it apart from the other buildings in the area. The hotel's lobby, featuring a large fireplace and overstuffed furniture, together with the two-story glass atrium, gives the hotel a distinctive atmosphere. The hotel's Catacombs Pub is located in what was originally the hotel's boiler room. The massive stone and brick walls once encased huge hotel boilers, and coal was delivered at the street level through a large chute that is now part of Catacombs cave seating area.
