Door County: Eating

One reward of a midsummer visit to Door County is the chance to sample the cherry in all its guises. Another traditional treat is the fish boil , a delicious outdoor ritual involving whitefish steaks, potatoes and onions cooked in a cauldron over a wood fire. Rounded off with coleslaw and cherry pie, it's widely available for between $10 and $16.

Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant Hwy-42, Sister Bay tel 920/854-2626. Pancakes, meatballs and other fine Scandinavian dishes are featured. Goats are tethered atop the sod roof.

Bayside Tavern Main St, Fish Creek tel 920/868-3441. A convivial pub serves a celebrated chili, burgers and a mean Friday night perch-fry.

Dal Santo's 341 N 3rd Ave, Sturgeon Bay tel 920/743-6100. Pizza, pasta and bar snacks are served in an old railroad depot with a good microbrewery. The cherry ale is surprisingly palatable and refreshing.

Square Rigger Lodge and Galley 6332 Hwy-57, Jacksonport tel 920/823-2408. This cocktail lounge and restaurant, on a private sandy beach, presents one of the county's best fish boils.

Wilson's Hwy-42, Ephraim tel 920/854-2041. Burgers, sandwiches and (along with the Door County Ice Cream Factory in Sister Bay) the top ice cream on the peninsula.
